Euchre

Two teams of two play five tricks with a 24-card deck in which the two jacks of the trump colour are the highest trumps, and the first team to 10 points wins. Free to play in your browser. No download, no sign-up.

How to play

Euchre is played by four players in two teams, you and North against West and East, with a deck of 24 cards from the 9 to the ace in each suit. The dealer gives 5 cards to every player and turns the next card face up, and the deal moves one seat to the left after every hand. In the first round each player, starting to the left of the dealer, may order up the suit of the turned card as trump or pass. When trump is ordered, the dealer picks up the turned card and discards one card face down.

If all four players pass, the turned card is put away and a second round starts, in which each player may name any other suit as trump or pass. The dealer may not pass in the second round and must name a suit, a rule called screw the dealer. The player who chooses trump may go alone, the partner of that player then sits out the hand, and a dealer whose partner goes alone does not pick up the turned card. The jack of trump, called the right bower, is the highest trump, and the other jack of the same colour, called the left bower, is the second highest and counts as a trump for every rule.

The player to the left of the dealer leads, everyone must follow the suit led when possible, and the highest trump or the highest card of the suit led wins the trick. The team that chose trump scores 1 point for 3 or 4 tricks and 2 points for all 5 tricks, called a march, or 4 points for a march played alone. If that team takes fewer than 3 tricks it is euchred and the other team scores 2 points. The first team to reach 10 points wins. The computer players call trump with three or more trumps or with both bowers, go alone with very strong hands, lead trump when their team chose it and win tricks with the cheapest card that does the job.

Controls

During the two rounds of bidding, buttons under the table let you pass, order up or pick up the turned card, name a suit, or do any of these alone. When you are the dealer and trump has been ordered, click the card you want to discard. During play, click or tap a bright card to play it, while the cards you cannot play are dimmed. The Sort and Fast buttons change the order of your hand and the speed of the computer players, and the score table lists every hand with its trump and the tricks of the makers.
