Hearts

Four players take thirteen tricks a hand, everyone avoids hearts and the queen of spades, and the lowest score wins when someone reaches 100. Free to play in your browser. No download, no sign-up.

How to play

Hearts is played by four players with one deck of 52 cards, and you play against three computer players called West, North and East. Each hand deals 13 cards to every player. Before play you choose three cards to pass, to the left on the first hand, to the right on the second, across on the third and not at all on the fourth, and this cycle repeats. The cards you receive are outlined in green in your hand until the first trick is over.

The player holding the 2 of clubs leads it to the first trick, and play goes clockwise. You must follow the suit that was led when you can, and the highest card of that suit wins the trick, with the ace high. On the first trick nobody may play a heart or the queen of spades unless the hand holds nothing else. Hearts cannot be led until a heart has been played on an earlier trick, unless the leader holds only hearts.

Every heart you take costs 1 point and the queen of spades costs 13. A player who takes all 13 hearts and the queen of spades shoots the moon, which means that player scores 0 and every other player scores 26. When a player reaches 100 points at the end of a hand, the player with the lowest score wins, and if two players share the lowest score another hand is played. The computer players pass their high spades and high hearts, play the highest card that still loses the trick and drop the queen of spades as soon as they cannot follow suit.

Controls

Click or tap a card to play it, and only the cards you are allowed to play stay bright when it is your turn. To pass, click three cards so they rise, then press the pass button. The Sort button switches your hand between suit order and rank order, and the Fast button shortens the pauses between computer moves. Every move is written in the message line under the table, and the score table under it lists the points of each hand.
