Canfield Solitaire

A 13-card reserve, a base rank set by the deal and foundations that wrap from King to Ace. Free to play in your browser. No download, no sign-up.

How to play

Canfield uses one deck. Thirteen cards form the reserve, with only the top card face up, and the next card is placed on the first foundation. Its rank becomes the base rank for all four foundations in that deal. Four cards are dealt face up as the four columns, and the remaining 34 cards form the stock.

Each foundation starts with a card of the base rank and builds up in suit, wrapping from King to Ace when needed. If the base rank is 9, a foundation runs 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, 2 and so on up to 8. Columns build down in alternating colours and also wrap, so a red King may go on a black Ace. A face-up card can be moved together with the cards built on it when the whole group follows these rules.

The top card of the reserve can be played to a foundation or a column, and an empty column is filled from the reserve at once. When the reserve is empty, any card or built group may go into an empty column. Clicking the stock turns three cards onto the waste, only the top waste card can be played, and the waste can be turned over as often as you like. The game is won when all 52 cards are on the foundations, and once the stock, waste and reserve are empty with every column in order the remaining cards move up on their own. Clearing the reserve early usually decides the game, because its cards cannot be reached any other way.

Controls

Drag a card or a built group with the mouse or a finger and drop it on the pile where it should go. A single tap or click on a card sends it to a foundation if it can go there, and otherwise to a legal column. Click the stock to turn three cards, and click the empty stock spot to turn the waste over. Undo takes back moves one at a time with no limit, and Hint outlines one possible move in yellow. Every deal has a number shown as Game #N, Restart deal plays the same cards again, and adding ?deal=N to the page address opens that exact deal.
