War

Turn up cards against the computer, the higher card takes both, and a tie starts a war for a bigger pile. Free to play in your browser. No download, no sign-up.

How to play

War is played by you against the computer with one deck of 52 cards, dealt face down into two piles of 26. In each round both players turn up the top card of their pile. The higher rank takes both cards, the ace is the highest card and the suits do not matter. The won cards are shuffled and put at the bottom of the winner's pile.

When the two cards have the same rank, it is war. Each player puts up to 3 cards face down and then turns one more card up, and the higher of the new cards takes every card on the table. Another tie starts another war in the same way. A player who runs short during a war turns up the last card at once, and a player with no card left to turn up loses the war and the game. If both players run out in the same war, each takes back his own cards and the game ends.

The game ends when one player holds all 52 cards or when the chosen number of rounds has been played, 50, 100 or 250 with the Rounds button. When the limit is reached, the player with more cards wins, and equal piles make a tie. There are no decisions in War, so the computer simply turns up its card at the same time as you. The table keeps a list of the last 8 rounds with the cards turned up and the number of wars.

Controls

Press the button to turn up a card, or click your pile at the bottom of the table. The Auto play button turns up cards for you one after another until you press Stop or the game ends. A war is shown with every pair of cards turned up and a banner between them. The Fast button shortens the pauses, and the summary at the right of the toolbar shows both pile sizes and the round number.
