Gin Rummy

Draw and discard to build sets and runs, knock with 10 points of deadwood or less, and reach 100 points first. Free to play in your browser. No download, no sign-up.

How to play

Gin Rummy is played by you against the computer with one deck of 52 cards, and the deal alternates. Each player gets 10 cards, one card is turned up to start the discard pile and the rest forms the stock, and the non-dealer plays first. On each turn you draw the top card of the stock or of the discard pile, then discard one card face up. A card taken from the discard pile cannot be thrown back on the same turn.

Melds are sets of 3 or 4 cards of the same rank and runs of 3 or more cards in sequence in one suit, with the ace low, so A 2 3 is a run and Q K A is not. Cards outside melds are deadwood, counted at face value with face cards worth 10 and aces 1, and the game always finds the split of your hand into melds that leaves the least deadwood. When your deadwood after the discard is 10 or less you may knock, and with no deadwood at all you go gin. If only 2 cards are left in the stock and nobody has knocked, the hand is void and nobody scores.

After a knock both hands are shown, and the defender may lay off deadwood cards on the melds of the knocker, which is not allowed after gin. The knocker scores the difference between the two deadwood counts, and gin scores 25 plus the deadwood of the defender. If the deadwood of the defender is equal to or lower than that of the knocker, it is an undercut and the defender scores 25 plus the difference. The first player to reach 100 points wins, without the box or game bonuses of some longer versions. The computer takes the discard only when it joins a meld and lowers its deadwood, throws the card that leaves the least deadwood while avoiding cards you have picked up, and knocks as soon as it may.

Controls

Draw by clicking the stock or the discard pile in the middle of the table. Then click the card you want to discard, and when knocking is allowed two buttons appear to discard the card or to knock with it, or to go gin. The cards that belong to a meld are outlined in green and your current deadwood is shown under your hand. After a knock the melds, the layoffs and the deadwood of both players are listed on the table, and the score table lists every hand.
