Brown's late touchdown pass lifts Blue Bombers over Argonauts in East semifinal
Dru Brown threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Nick Demski with 44 seconds left to complete the comeback victory.
TORONTO · Dru Brown threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Nick Demski with 44 seconds remaining to rally the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 25-22 victory over the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL East Division semifinal Saturday afternoon at BMO Field. After the touchdown capped a 52-yard, five-play drive, Brown hit Demski again for the two-point conversion. The winning march was set up by former Argo Thiadric Hansen's recovery of a Janarion Grant fumble on a punt return. The Blue Bombers will travel to Montreal for the East final next weekend. The Alouettes and Bombers split their regular-season series 1-1.
Toronto starter Chad Kelly left the game with just over nine minutes remaining due to an apparent right shoulder injury. Kelly had completed 18 of 30 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown before a season-high 21,786 spectators and did not return. Nick Arbuckle was two-of-six passing for 25 yards in relief. Brown finished 18-of-30 for 206 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for Winnipeg, which was playing without injured starting quarterback Zach Collaros. The Argonauts defence forced four turnovers, including two interceptions and two fumbles, but the offence managed only three field goals. With 2:07 to play, Toronto opted to punt on third-and-one from its own 45-yard line, giving Winnipeg possession at its 24 with 1:54 left. Lirim Hajrullahu's 41-yard field goal at 2:37 of the fourth quarter had given Toronto a 22-17 lead.
David Reese's 52-yard fumble return touchdown at 14:22 of the third quarter pulled Winnipeg to within 19-17. Defensive lineman Michael Fletcher knocked the ball away from Kelly, who had dropped back to pass. That score came after Winnipeg drove to the Toronto 31 before Tim White fumbled after being hit by Alex Teubner. Toronto's Wynton McManis recovered the ball, returning it 22 yards. The Argos opened the second half with a 73-yard, 10-play drive but settled for a Hajrullahu 10-yard field goal at 5:38. They avoided further damage after a too many men penalty on third down gave Winnipeg possession at the Toronto 38-yard line, but Sergio Castillo's 47-yard field goal attempt into the wind was wide. Toronto forced three first-half turnovers but only mustered three field goals for a 16-10 halftime lead.

Hajrullahu gave Toronto a six-point lead with a 28-yard field goal at 14:18 of the second quarter, set up by McManis's 23-yard return of a Brown fumble. Hajrullahu's 37-yard field goal at 12:40 put Toronto ahead 13-10 following Dathan Hickey's interception. Castillo had tied the game 10-10 with a 42-yard field goal at 6:48. Hajrullahu's 42-yard boot nine seconds into the second quarter put Toronto ahead 10-7, set up by DaShaun Amos's 19-yard interception return.
Tyler Kahmann's 20-yard touchdown catch made it 7-7 at 12:48 of the first quarter. Kelly completed all six of his passes on the eight-play, 70-yard drive. Ontaria Wilson's one-handed 32-yard touchdown grab at 2:54 opened the scoring for Winnipeg. It capped a five-play, 88-yard march aided by a 15-yard horse collar penalty against Toronto's Adarius Pickett.
Winnipeg was making its second straight appearance in the East semifinal after losing 42-33 last year to Montreal. The Blue Bombers are the 14th crossover team from the West Division since the format was adopted in 1996. Those teams now have a 7-8 all-time record in the East playoffs, and none have reached the Grey Cup. David Reese and Ontaria Wilson had Winnipeg's other touchdowns, while Sergio Castillo added two converts and a field goal. Tyler Kahmann scored Toronto's lone touchdown, and Lirim Hajrullahu booted the convert and five field goals.
