Chris Brown receives suspended sentence for London nightclub attack
The singer was sentenced to eight months, suspended for 12 months, for an attack on a music producer.
LONDON · Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown avoided immediate imprisonment on Monday after a U.K. judge handed him an eight-month suspended sentence for attacking a music producer in a London nightclub in 2023. Brown, 37, pleaded guilty to a charge of affray in July for the assault on Abraham Diaw at the Tape nightclub in the city's Mayfair neighbourhood. His co-defendant and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, who also pleaded guilty to affray, received a four-month sentence, also suspended for 12 months. Both men will only serve those sentences if they commit another offence within the next year.
Judge Tony Baumgartner, presiding at London's Southwark Crown Court, described the violence as serious. "Violence of this kind in a crowded nightclub is serious. It creates an obvious risk, not merely to the person against whom it is directed, but also others nearby," Baumgartner said. The judge recounted that Brown struck Diaw twice in the head with a tequila bottle and continued the attack until he was restrained. "The repeated use of a glass bottle against the head made your conduct particularly dangerous," Baumgartner told Brown.
Prosecutors had described the incident as an "unprovoked attack" that could have carried a maximum sentence of three years in prison. Video footage played in court showed Brown having to be pulled away from Diaw after striking him with the bottle. "The repeated use of a glass bottle in that way, especially aimed at the head, was plainly dangerous, it carried the risk of delivering a more serious injury than was ultimately sustained," Baumgartner said in court. The Crown Prosecution Service said the duo continued their assault while Diaw tried to flee and that he was kicked while defenseless on the floor.

Before sentencing, Judge Baumgartner warned Brown that his fame did not grant him special treatment. "I take account of your employment and long-established career in music. Your fame, commercial success and professional standing do not entitle you to special treatment. The law applies equally to everyone," the judge said, according to Variety. Baumgartner cited several mitigating factors, including the absence of planning, the short duration of the assault, about 20 seconds, Brown's stable employment, charity work and his role as a father to four young children. The judge acknowledged Brown's previous convictions but noted he had maintained a clean record in recent years.
Brown's lawyer, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins, called him "a dedicated, loving and loyal father" and said he was sorry for the "ugly and unattractive incident." Brown and Akinlolu were each required to pay a portion of the prosecution's costs. Brown was arrested in May 2025 in connection with the incident after returning to Britain for a tour. He was initially denied bail but was released after promising to pay a £5 million security fee. His bail conditions included surrendering his passport when not touring, not contacting Diaw and not visiting the Tape nightclub.
Brown has an extensive criminal record involving violence. In 2009, he was sentenced to five years probation after pleading guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna. He later served jail time in 2014 for a misdemeanor assault charge in Washington, D.C. In July, prosecutors dropped more serious charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and having an offensive weapon in return for the guilty plea to affray. Claire Campbell, a senior crown prosecutor, said in a statement that the CPS would work to prove "that no one is above the law." Shortly after Monday's sentencing, Brown shared a video to his Instagram Stories appearing to be in a car leaving court and giving a thumbs up to the camera.
